Jets and fragmentation

چکیده
I review the status of next-to-leading-order calculations for hadronic final states in deeply-inelastic lepton–nucleon scattering. In more detail, I focus on calculations of (2+1)-jet-type cross sections, describe recent progress in extending the perturbative description into the transition region between deeply inelastic scattering and photoproduction, and study the validity of the fragmentation function picture for one-particle-inclusive cross sections at small Q and small xp.

Scaling Violations of Quark and Gluon Jet Fragmentation Functions in Ee Annihilations
Hadron production in high energy collisions can be described by parton showers, followed by the formation of hadrons which cannot be described perturbatively. Gluon emission, the dominant process in parton showers, is proportional to the colour factor associated with the coupling of the emitted gluon to the emitter. These colour factors are CA = 3 when the emitter is a gluon and CF = 4/3 when i...
متن کاملCharged Particle Production in the Fragmentation of Quark and Gluon Jets
Recent results on the total production and angular distribution of charged particles originated from the fragmentation of quark and gluon jets are presented. Experimental studies of the multiplicity as a function of the quark and gluon jet energy, the inter-jet particle flow and the individual fragmentation functions are reviewed and compared to expectations from QCD. To appear in the proceedin...
متن کاملHeavy Flavor Fragmentation and Decay at Sld
Results on heavy quark fragmentation obtained using the SLD detector at the SLAC Linear Collider are presented. This talk will cover the ratio of vector to pseudoscalar charmed meson production, the inclusive B hadron energy distribution, the inclusive particle production in heavy jets compared to their production in light jets, and charged and neutral B meson lifetimes.
متن کاملTests of QCD using differences between gluon and quark jets
I present recent results from LEP which utilize differences between gluon and quark jets to make quantitative tests of QCD. The principal topic is a determination of the ratio of QCD color factors, CA/CF, using either the multiplicity or fragmentation functions of the jets. In addition, I discuss a recent measurement of the rate of η mesons in gluon jets compared to quark jets.
متن کاملProperties of Gluon and Quark Jets
Recent developments and results on the comparison of gluon to quark jets are discussed. A most important topic is the introduction of explicit energy scales of the jets. The scaling violation of the fragmentation function and the increase of the multiplicity with scale is shown to be directly proportional to the corresponding gluon or quark colour factor. The ratio of the hadron multiplicity in...
متن کاملPolarized Beam Jets
Handedness and a left-right asymmetry have been proposed as methods of probing the polarization of hard jets. If the analyzing powers for these observables are substantial they would provide useful tools for probing polarized hard scattering. This paper proposes that comparing these to the corresponding quantities in beam jets in polarized hadron-hadron collisions would be useful. These would s...
